WHAT'S NEW!
This is a significant update to all previous versions of our Reel Tape Recorder productions. With the additional 2 hours, we've gone behind the scenes to provide insight into how the companies were formed and evolved.
We believe our production captures the story behind the development of the reel tape recorder which truly enabled musicians to refine their music, became an essential tool for broadcast and captured wonderful memories for families.
It is a brief period from the 1930's to the 1980's. Otari is the only company still manufacturing reel tape recorders.
We also hope you enjoy seeing the tape recorders in our collection. We worked to present a good cross section of the various manufacturers.
If you ordered the first version prior to 2011, then there are numerous updates including our acquisition of the Ampex 200A and 300, plus many other added items.
If you ordered after January 2011, much of the content has been re-edited to reduce duplication and improve the demonstration of working units. Many recorders have been worked on, upgraded, or simply replaced with a more complete example of the brand.
The most significant difference in this release is the documentation of the 40+ tape recorder companies represented in our collection. While many of the profiles are brief, they include a bit about the founding of the companies and how they evolved including ads from the various years. For several of the companies we even have early pictures of the recorder factories.
Additional updates include numerous additions to the History of Sound Recording, new recorders (including Willie Studer's Dynavox T-26), microphones (including the RCA 77-DX & Sony C37P) and accessories that have been added to the collection.
Thank you for your interest in the reel to reel tape recorder!
There are 284 electric motors in the 151 reel tape recorders in our collection.
Phantom Productions, Inc. vintage recording collection began in 1998 with a 1904 Edison cylinder player. It has since grown to the many recorders noted on our reel2reeltexas.com web site. These DVDs provide a tour of our vintage recording collection. There are approximately 151 reel to reel tape recorders and other unique items related to recording. This is a 3 DVD 7 hour plus set that also includes and a segment on how the tape recorder works and a segment about our recording work around the State of Texas.
Most of the DVD is dedicated to the profile of the reel tape recorders that came available in the US in the late 1940's through the 1980's. We also include a profile of our wire recorders, a spring motor tape recorder and several other unique and unusual recording devices. The DVDs also shows the numerous microphones in the Phantom collection. While we don't go into great depth, we demonstrate the many working units and provide some base information on when they were manufactured and what they cost new.
