Reel2ReelTexas.com and MOMSR's goal is to help preserve the history of the development of the reel to reel tape recorder and recognize those persons who provided the innovations along the way.  In spite of its relatively short history (1930's to the 1980's), the reel tape recorder enabled folks for the first time to capture sound with ever increasing levels of quality. Whether it be the musician preparing for the studio, broadcasters documenting a major event, or just capturing granddad interacting with the kids, reel tape recorders preserved the moments.

Most of our magazines and catalogs are now for sale priced from $6.95 to $35.

Please contact us and we'll provide a price quote and shipping for what you're looking for, (if we still have it

Sony APR-5003  We are downsizing our vintage recording collection. Sad to let this one go, however it didn't make the retention cut.

This sale is for the Sony APR-5003 professional reel to reel tape recorder. It was manufactured in 1988. We bought the recorder in 2013 to be used as a display only recorder in our collection. At that time, we were in the process of acquiring all the first and last analog machines built by the various major tape recorder manufacturers.

This Sony was never used by us except for periodic tour demonstrations that occurred every couple of months. It would be played briefly, however was more used to demonstrate the tape handling in comparison the the MCI and Ampex machines next to it. I never attempted to record with the unit, nor am I familiar with all its assets and functions. Extensive information is available on line about this great tape recorder.

I have performed no maintenance on this recorder, other than to periodically clean the unit and tape path. The recorder appears to function as expected and handles tape very well. The playback sounds good and the heads look in great shape. The small speaker volume control sounds noisy and most likely all the pots need cleaning. All switches appear to function as they should and all the lights come on. At 30 ips the right take-up side sounds noisy and I believe routine servicing the of unit will be necessary.

The recorder shows normal wear and there are scratches, including those noted in the photo of the counter screen.

This sale includes the bound full operation and service manual as pictured.

The Ampex reel of tape is NOT included. The 10" Sony take-up reel and reel hubs, power cord and stand are included.

This Sony is being sold "as described" for local pickup. I strongly prefer not to ship this recorder. If someone can arrange to have to recorder picked, packed and shipped at the Buyers expense, I will help facilitate the process.

The spec as I have them are:

    • Freq Response 57 Hz to 28 kHz
    • Signal to Noise -68 dB

Magnasync vintage 16mm sound film Recorder, Amplifier & Speaker 1950's

Our private collection is selling items that are no longer going to be retained in our permanent collection. This 1950's Magnasync 16 mm magnetic film audio recorder, amplifier and speaker are professional units and incredibly well built. Our Museum bought these units as display items to reflect film's contribution to magnetic recording. These units have not been powered on due to their age, so they are being sold "as is." They all look in very good shape and are serious heavy duty pieces of equipment.

The three boxes will be shipped together. Local pickup preferred. UPS packing charge will be in addition to shipping charge.

Sparta Broadcast Console Model A-20B & power supply for parts/repair

Sparta Broadcast Console Model A-20B & power supply for parts/repair

Our private collection is downsizing and selling items that are not going to be retained in the permanent collection. This Sparta Model A-20B radio broadcast console & power supply was purchased for "display" purposes only. We hoped it would end up in a "broadcast" section of our museum, but it was never funded. The console had been removed from a radio station and unfortunately they cut the power supply cord (I guess for quick removal). It is not possible for us to test the console and as you can tell from the photos, it's missing knobs and knob covers and shows heavy wear. We are selling this console "as is" for parts. We prefer to have this picked up locally. However we will take care of packing or the buyer can pay to have UPS pack it up.

Ampex/Teac PR260 instrumentation Data multi-track reel to reel tape recorder

Our private collection is downsizing and selling items that are not going to be retained in the permanent collection. This Ampex/Teac PR260 instrumentation Data multi-track reel to reel tape recorder was purchased for "display" purposes only. We hoped it would end up in a data/instrumentation section of our museum, but it was never funded.

While many Ampex and other reel tape recorders went to recording studios and broadcast stations, a large percentage went to data recording (especially Ampex & Magnecord). This Ampex/Teac PR 260 uses 1/2" tape and runs at speeds from 15/16/ to 30 ips. This is a closed loop, however we don't have any additional sales info.  We include an Ampex PR-260/280 manual and the tapes seen in the photos. The pressure roller has deteriorated. When the machine is powered on, the meter reacts, however the recorder will not go into any of the play, record, or wind modes.  This Ampex PR260 is being sold "as is" for parts or repair.

We prefer local pickup. If shipped we will have UPS pack the recorder.

Toshiba PT-884 4 channel reel tape recorder Needs Work

Toshiba PT-884 4 channel reel tape recorder

We are downsizing our reel tape recorder collection and selling items that are not going to be retained in the permanent collection. This sale is for the Toshiba PT-884 4 channel (Quadraphonic) reel to reel tape recorder. It is very well built and finished. This unit originally sold for $500 and came out in the 1970's. We purchased this recorder to demonstrate the Quadraphonic tapes in the collection.

This recorder looks great except for scratches on the control mechanism. This unit will require someone who is willing to to work out the problems described below. Unfortunately, I do not have the time, nor repair resources to tackle the problems with this 40+ year old tape recorder.

The control of the tape mechanism uses a single handle.  It turns left or right to go into forward play. The turn to the right is a bit finicky, however turning to the left goes into play okay. I found that if I turn the "Play" lever hard right, or hard left, it goes into play with no problem. The control is pushed down and turned left or right for rewind and fast forward. However the brakes on both directions allow the reels to spill tape, so these need adjusting.  The unit plays and records and sounds except for the right front channel which is weak.

We do not have the Service, nor Owners manuals, however you can view the specs on the photo of the cover of the Service Manual in our listing. This recorder has both RCA and DIN plugs on the back. It also has independent 4 channel bias controls on the back. The Toshiba take up reel is included.

    So issues:
Control lever needs contact cleaning to clear up the hesitation to engage.
Rewind and fast forward dump tape which is a braking problem. The brakes will need adjusting.
The tape counter is not working and probably just needs a new belt.

All four channels of the tape playback work, but the right front channel is weak

The meters are not responding in playback. In "Record" the meters go to the mid position and don't fluctuate with the sound input. I may not be doing something correctly in record. However with a mic plugged into each channel, sound is heard in "source" on all channels. All the channels playback the mic, except, as mentioned the right front is weak.
Tape and Source switches needed to be exercised to provide a clean sound, so those contacts need cleaning.

This recorder will be well packed by the UPS Store, so please note the handling charge for UPS packing and shipping.

The unit is solid and very clean. There are some scratches on the control decorative plate. The cabinet is in perfect shape, except for a couple of nicks. Due to its age the recorder needs serious adjusting and maintenance. As with all our vintage sales, this Toshiba is being sold "as is." Please understand if you purchase this recorder, you are acknowledging the problems listed above and realize there may be more areas that require attention, cleaning, or repair. It's a good project candidate.

FREE local pickup available. No international shipping!

There are 323 electric motors in the 151 reel tape recorders in our collection.

Phantom Productions, Inc. vintage recording collection began in 1998 with a 1904 Edison cylinder player.  It has since grown to the many recorders noted on this web site.  We've produced a video tour of our vintage recording collection.  There are approximately 151 reel to reel tape recorders and other unique items related to recording. This is 7 hour set that also includes a brief history of sound recording and a segment on how the tape recorder works.  Also we include a segment on our on-location  recording work around the State of Texas.

Most of the videos are dedicated to the profile of the reel tape recorders that came available in the US in the late 1940's through the 1980's.  We also include a profile of our wire recorders.  While we don't go into great depth, we demonstrate the many working units and provide some base information on when they were manufactured and what they cost new.
