Phantom Production's Reel2ReelTexas logo

Phantom Productions' goal is to help preserve the history of the development of the reel to reel tape recorder and recognize those persons who provided the innovations along the way.  In spite of its relatively short history (1930's to the 1980's), the reel tape recorder enabled folks for the first time to capture sound with ever increasing levels of quality. Whether it be the musician preparing for the studio, broadcasters documenting a major event, or just capturing granddad interacting with the kids, reel tape recorders preserved the moments.

Phantom Productions has a 5 hour 2 DVD set profiling our vintage tape recording clooection for $14.95. The set also includes some history of sound recording; how the tape recoder works and a bit about recording in Texas during the 1960's through the 1980's.

Tandberg 15 reel to reel tape recorder for sale

Tandberg 15 mono reel to reel tape recorder.  All mechanical functions are working.  Electronics provide no sound.  We've not worked on this unit and so it is being sold as is.

EICO 2400

We're selling excess equipment. We recently acquired the EICO RP100 and so are selling this non-working 2400 unit in the collection. Cosmetically this recorder is in good shape. Two of the knobs are missing their silver insets. The tubes light up; the green light meters seem to work; the motor runs, however the play and rewind functions don't work. Even though there is a capstan belt the capstan is too stiff to allow it to turn. Unfortunately we've not had the time to work on this and so are selling it as is. As with all our vintage auctions, this recorder is being sold "as-is." Please take a look at our vintage reel to reel recording collection at Thank you for considering our listing.

I took a few moments to check out the Eico further. This recorder is receiving signal and recording on both channels from both microphone and line inputs. Unfortunately the stiff capstan prevented me from recording and playing properly. However, I was able to record a signal, moving the tape by hand. This unit does not have a monitor out capability. The Eico played back fine in the left channel, however not the right. The Channel A, channel B and Stereo knob had been loose on the unit. I found that this switch could not be changed (and part of the knob retainer shaft is broken), so that may, or may not be the problem with the right channel. When I moved the tape to another recorder, I found that both channels had recorded properly.

This is a three motor unit and both fast winds are working. The main motor is also working perfectly. I used some light machine oil to help the stiff capstan, however it never loosened up enough to allow the motor to turn the capstan

Here's an ad for the unit with more detail

There are 323 electric motors in the 151 reel tape recorders in our collection.

Phantom Productions, Inc. vintage recording collection began in 1998 with a 1904 Edison cylinder player.  It has since grown to the many recorders noted on this web site.  We've produced a DVD tour of our vintage recording collection.  There are approximately 151 reel to reel tape recorders and other unique items related to recording. This is a 3 DVD 7 hour set that also includes a brief history of sound recording and a segment on how the tape recorder works.  Also we include a segment on our on-location  recording work around the State of Texas.

Most of the DVD is dedicated to the profile of the reel tape recorders that came available in the US in the late 1940's through the 1980's.  We also include a profile of our wire recorders.  While we don't go into great depth, we demonstrate the many working units and provide some base information on when they were manufactured and what they cost new.
